Prieuré de Cénac: A French Malbec with Depth and Character
A Bold Cahors Malbec Worth Savoring
This dry, medium-bodied Malbec from Cahors is a deep, dark beauty with layers of flavor. In the glass, the wine shows a gorgeous plum-purple color with a bit of fine sediment — always a sign of care in the winemaking process. On the nose, I picked up dark fruit, a touch of tobacco, savory herbs, and dark spice.
The palate is intense and structured, matching the richness of its color. While I personally enjoyed the 2016 vintage more and found it slightly superior, the 2017 is still an excellent bottle and very well put together.
If you’re used to Argentine Malbecs, this one offers a different expression worth exploring. Cahors is where Malbec originally thrives, and this bottle is a great introduction to the region’s style. At least to me, it was intriguing since I tried to pronounce the name: Prieuré de Cénac.
Pairing tip: Perfect with roasted meats, hearty stews, or a rich mushroom risotto.
