Castello del Poggio — An Old Favorite

Castello del Poggio Moscato was actually one of the first Moscatos I really became familiar with. I first tried it at Olive Garden and eventually became pretty loyal to it. Maybe there’s a little nostalgia involved, but the flavor became very recognizable to me. It was sweet, approachable, easy to drink, and especially nice alongside pasta. For someone just beginning to explore wine, I still think it’s a very easy place to start.

But this bottle also gives me a very clear before and after. I really liked the older presentation, particularly the Burgundy-style bottle. To me, it gave the wine a more traditional, old-village European feel, and when the packaging changed, I noticed immediately—and admittedly, not necessarily in the best way.

I can appreciate what they were trying to accomplish with the redesign. I like that the castle became more prominent within the crest, and knowing that the floral illustrations were chosen to represent characteristics of the different wines makes me appreciate the thought behind them. The effort to make the brand feel younger and more noticeable on the shelf also makes sense to me. Do I understand it? Yes. Do I personally prefer it? #NotQuite.

And strangely enough, my experience with the wine itself has changed too. I can’t say whether that’s the wine, my palate changing over the years, or simply my association with the older version. It just doesn’t taste quite the way I remember it. It still has that familiar sweetness and easy-drinking character, but personally, I don’t enjoy it quite as much as I once did.

That doesn’t erase what I liked about it in the first place. It’s still a pleasant, sweet Moscato, still incredibly approachable, and still a wine I associate with some of my earliest experiences figuring out what I enjoyed drinking. Revisiting this old favorite was realizing that both the wine in front of you and the person tasting it may have changed.

Verdict Nice flower bouquet brings you to the field. Sweet and easy-drinking, with a familiar fruity character and a soft, approachable palate. Light and uncomplicated, with enough freshness to keep the sweetness pleasant. An accessible Moscato that works particularly well for those beginning to explore sweeter wines.
