Viré-Clessé vs Mâcon-Péronne “L’Étoile”

I was online and saw these wines at a great discount. I actually got three of theMaison Matisco but decided to do the vs. among these two. Please note this comparison between the Maison Matisco Viré-Clessé 2022 and the Mâcon-Péronne “L’Étoile” 2022 comes about six months after our initial tasting in 2025, when both wines were in a perfect drinking window.

L’Étoile immediately stood out as the richer of the two — a creamy, expressive Chardonnay with layers of hazelnut, apricot, peach, apple, and a touch of honey on the nose, carrying into a lightly nutty, honeyed palate with a bright, polished finish. It felt complete, generous, and full of character.

The Viré-Clessé offered a different expression — more delicate and floral, with a calm chamomile-like aroma and a fresh, balanced profile that made it equally enjoyable in its own way. While lighter in body and less pronounced than L’Étoile, it remained refreshing and satisfying, showing a quieter elegance. In the end, among tasters we agreed that L’Étoile took the lead, though both wines reflected a thoughtful balance that even carries through to the label design — simple, spring-like, and elegant, yet clearly crafted with intention.

If anything, this tasting confirmed that these wines are best enjoyed fresh, and it leaves little doubt that exploring more from Maison Matisco would be well worth it.

Verdict L’Étoile opens with ripe stone fruit, apple, and honey layered over toasted hazelnut, leading to a creamy yet balanced palate with a bright finish. The Viré-Clessé leans more floral, with soft chamomile notes, subtle citrus, and a fresh, lifted structure. Both wines finish clean and refreshing, with L’Étoile offering more depth while Viré-Clessé highlights finesse and elegance.
