A Treat from 1990

I feel so fortunate to have tasted this 1990 beauty—Château Doisy-Védrines—at a wine tasting event on Palm Beach Island hosted by The French Wine Merchant. Maurice had carefully preserved just a few bottles, and it was an unforgettable surprise. During a past trip to Bordeaux, my memory of Sauternes was of wines that leaned too sweet for my liking. But this vintage changed everything. Its color alone was interestingly a deep, dark amber, richer than many orange wines you see today.

Paired with dessert, the wine truly revealed its notes. The experience helped me understand how sweetness and texture can harmonize when paired thoughtfully. I tasted layers of ripe fruit and honey, with a hint of wildflower fields that lingered beautifully. It reminded me of the wines at La Tour Blanche, where I also favored the oldest, oak-aged vintages. This 1990 proved my preference for Sauternes with at least touch of oak—a stunning example of how time and craftsmanship can transform sweetness AND color.

About the Château

Château Doisy-Védrines itself is a Second Cru Classé (Second Growth) estate from the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Its vineyards, on the highest plateau of Barsac, are planted mostly with Sémillon (about 80%), with the rest being Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Although situated in Barsac, the château chooses the broader Sauternes appellation, producing some of the richest, most full-bodied wines in the area—bottles that easily reward five to twenty-five years of careful cellaring.
