Three Sauternes Side by Side
Our Bordeaux cruise excursion led us to Château La Tour Blanche, a charming estate blending history and education. Our friendly guide explained Sauternes’ unique climate, the morning mists essential for noble rot, and how careful grape selection creates these renowned sweet wines. After exploring the scenic vineyards, historic buildings, and cellar, it was time to taste the wines! This is a vs. of the 3 wines tasted, with my rating on the winner.
And then there were three… Sauternes
The tasting opened with Brumes de La Tour Blanche 2022 with quite a candied intensity. Its sweetness dominated so completely that I struggled to pick out any notes. It did have also a pleasant sweet aroma, but overwhelming to my palate.
Next came Les Charmilles 2021, still lush and honeyed but more layered (my brain was happier lol). I caught hints of Sémillon richness and Muscadelle florals, plus vanilla and warm honey. Even so, it remained sweeter than I typically enjoy.
Finally, the estate’s flagship 1er Cru Classé “Donation Osiris” 2016 showed why age and oak matter. The extra years in bottle and time in barrel brought balance: nutty undertones, subtle spice, and honeyed fruit wrapped in a deeper amber hue. This was easily my favorite—complex, elegant, and proof that Sauternes rewards patience.
